Crowded Teeth

Hesslewood Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth, also known as dental crowding, is a common orthodontic issue with insufficient space in the jaw for teeth to align correctly. This condition can lead to various dental health problems and impact the appearance of a person’s smile. Understanding the causes, potential complications, and available treatments is crucial for managing crowded teeth effectively.

Causes of Crowded Teeth

Several factors can contribute to dental crowding:

  • Genetics: One of the primary causes is genetic inheritance. A person with a small jaw but larger teeth is more likely to experience crowding.
  • Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth: If baby teeth are lost too early or too late, it can affect how permanent teeth emerge, leading to misalignment and crowding.
  • Jaw Size: Evolutionary changes have led to smaller jaws in modern humans compared to our ancestors, which can result in less space for teeth.
  • Thumb Sucking and Pacifier Use: Prolonged thumb sucking or use of pacifiers can alter the shape of the jaw and lead to crowded teeth.
  • Impacted Teeth: Teeth that do not fully emerge from the gums can push other teeth out of alignment, causing crowding.

Complications of Crowded Teeth

Dental crowding can cause several oral health issues:

  • Difficulty in Cleaning: Crowded teeth can make brushing and flossing effectively challenging, leading to a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Bite Problems: Misaligned teeth can result in malocclusion, where the upper and lower teeth do not meet correctly, leading to issues with chewing and speaking.
  • Jaw Pain and TMJ Disorders: Crowding can cause strain on the jaw muscles and joints, potentially leading to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Crowded teeth can affect the appearance of a person’s smile, impacting self-esteem and confidence

Treatment Options for Crowded Teeth

Addressing dental crowding typically involves orthodontic interventions. The appropriate treatment depends on the severity of the crowding and the patient’s specific needs:

  • Braces: Traditional metal braces are the most common treatment for crowded teeth. They apply continuous pressure to move teeth into the correct position over time. Less noticeable ceramic braces are also an option.
  • Invisalign: These are clear, removable aligners custom-made to fit over the teeth. They are a popular alternative to braces for mild to moderate crowding and offer the benefit of being nearly invisible.
  • Palatal Expanders: For younger patients, a palatal expander can widen the upper jaw, creating more space for teeth to align correctly.
  • Tooth Extraction: In severe cases of crowding, extracting one or more teeth might be necessary to create space for the remaining teeth to move into proper alignment.
  • Retainers: After braces or Invisalign treatment, retainers are used to maintain the new position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting back

  • Implants

I have had a lower bridge from back molar, spanning 4 teeth for over 20 years.
Unfortunately the back ‘anchor’ molar broke off, taking the bridge with it.
This meant I couldn’t eat with the left of my mouth.
    Not many options!
Thankfully Shanthi suggested ‘perhaps we could put two implants in’.
Once bone density checked, the worked commenced.
A few painless visits and I now have two perfect, solid implants.
They look good, matching my own teeth perfectly and I can now enjoy a good steak!
Shanthi’s skill and care at every stage, just made it all so stress free

  • Thoroughly recommend this practice

I recently joined the practice after being let down by my NHS provider. It was a great decision. I’ve had an old filling removed from a broken tooth that had left a jagged tooth and this has been expertly and painlessly refilled, it feels and looks so much better. Shanthi and the team are kind and considerate, I was given a thorough assessment and advice so I knew exactly what to expect. I thoroughly recommend this practice.

  • Fantastic dentist

The team are fantastic, made me feel at ease, the treatment I received I was dreading but Shanthi is brilliant at what she does and made it as pain free as possible. Lorna and the other girls helped take care of my mischievous little toddler while I was getting treatment. Honestly I couldn’t be more grateful to you all. Fantastic dentist. The best by far.

  • Would 100% recommend

Going to visit the dentist is not my idea of fun but the relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and professionalism helped enormously.

This was my first visit and Shanthi gave me a thougher check-up and highlighted issues that I was never made aware from my previous dentist.

Would 100% recommend Hesslewood Lodge if you are looking for a professional dentist in the Hessle area.

  • Excellent service

I have been going to this dentist for over 30 years and the service is excellent. They always send out reminders of your appointment so no chance of forgetting. Over the last few years I’ve had problems where I’ve needed to get in quickly for checks and treatment, and they have always got me in to see the dentist within 48 hours. The treatment is excellent and the dentist always discusses what is happening and makes sure you are happy with what is being done. Everyone is nervous about going to the dentist, but all the staff are respectful and caring and the atmosphere is very calming
